Little Women: Book Review

"Little Women" tells the story of four contrasting teenage sisters. They live at home with their 'Marmee' while their father is away serving for the Union Army during the American Civil War.

Margaret ‘Meg’ is the oldest and is of seventeen years when the story begins. She is an aspiring actress but works as a governess to support her family. She is the most beautiful of all the sister and wants to make a good marriage to lead a comfortable life.

Josephine ‘Jo’ is a tomboy of fifteen who wishes to be a well known writer. She is short tempered and has a sharp tongue which usually gets her in trouble. She is a cheerful soul with a kind heart. Jo assists her old Aunt March to financially support her family.

Elizabeth ‘Beth’ is a timid thirteen year old who studies at home as she is very fragile to go to school. She takes care of the housework and she loves to play the piano. Beth, unlike her sister, does not have any big plans for her future. She only wishes to stay at home and help in taking care of the family.

Amy is the youngest sister of twelve years. She is good at drawing and wants to become an artist. She has perfect manners and is very conscious of her self importance.

The novel revolves around the dreams, aspirations and troubles of their lives. It also gives us a taste of normal life back in the 1800’s and describes the journey of the girls from childhood to womanhood.

It is written in a simple language and does not contain the extravagant tragedies of classic literature. The writing reflects the thoughts of the characters and gives us a feel of being with them.

Alcott’s writing is elegant and realistic. The book is truly one of the best books I have read and rightfully called a “classic masterpiece”.
